James Gleeson (1915–2008) is renowned as Australia’s foremost surrealist painter and poet. He also made an important contribution to the wider Australian art world as a writer, critic, lecturer and curator. In 2005, he established the Gleeson O’Keefe Foundation to assist the Art Gallery of NSW in acquiring important works of Australian art. The name of the Foundation pays tribute to the support of Gleeson’s long-time partner Frank O’Keefe without whose help, support and inspiration, ‘my life as an artist would have been quite different’.
Presented here are artworks acquired through the Gleeson O’Keefe Foundation since 2005. Click on an image to view the work in the Gallery collection and for more information (including medium, dimensions and whether the work is currently on display).
