Provenance project: South Asian sculptures

Provenance is the history of ownership of a work of art, from the time of its discovery or creation to the present.

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is undertaking a comprehensive provenance research project across our Asian art collection.

There are more than 50 South Asian sculptures in the Art Gallery’s collection. Some of these objects have histories that date back centuries and have incomplete chains of ownership about which we welcome further information.

It is important to note:
● No claims have been made against any of these works of art.
● Gaps in provenance do not necessarily indicate theft or looting.
● For many works, details may never be found.
