Context
Through the Structural, Cultural and Post Modern frames this unit of work provides learning opportunities for students to develop their own sculptural object and consider the significance of context in the interpretation of an artwork.
In artmaking, students will engage in the construction of a series of sculptural studies informed by the art practice of the following Aboriginal fibre artists:
Phyllis Stewart
Lorraine Connelly-Northey
Yvonne Koolmatrie
Tjanpi Desert Weavers
In critical and historical studies students will consider the cultural significance of material practice for some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Students will investigate the relationships between artists and artworks to understand how and why artists create artworks that communicate ideas about their world to audiences. Students will use a subjective point of view to create a contemporary object that reflects their environment and holds significance to them. Students will further investigate the function of artworks and audiences through an exploration of how context affects the creation of meaning.
