Tiger Yaltangki Ngayulu munu papa kutjara (Me with two dogs)

acrylic on linen

199.2 x 198.3 cm

Tiger Yaltangki is largely non-verbal, so his artistic practice represents a vital form of self-expression. A compulsive drawer and mark-maker, he works every day at Iwantja Arts in the Indulkana community on the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, South Australia.

Dogs are constant companions for Yaltangki and other artists at Iwantja, sitting faithfully beside them as they paint in the studio. This self-portrait acknowledges the importance of Yaltangki’s papa (dogs), while referencing another significant element of his daily studio practice: the rock-and-roll rhythms of his favourite music from his boombox cassette player. His vibrant and prolific artistic output is closely informed by his love of music, especially AC/DC and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Yaltangki was a finalist in the 2020 Archibald Prize with another self-portrait.
