Marcel Cousins Flor de Alegría Mandevilla so pink (still life)

acrylic on canvas

165.5 x 210.5 cm

My work is open-ended, allowing the viewer to complete the puzzle through our memories, experiences and cultural background. Using photo-media, the work translates an image of a flower that did exist somewhere but has been filtered by a process of computer manipulation and executed with an airbrush, mimicking industrial methods of production.

The resulting image is informed by magazines, the internet and the world of graphic logs. With shifts in scale, content and materials, the work sets out to shed light on the way media systems influence and define how we receive and interpret the world around us. These mediated representations have become commonplace in our daily lives, blurring the line between reality and simulation.
