acrylic on canvas

198 x 152.4 cm

The starting point for this work was a suspended construction that I built in my studio, consisting of painted motifs arranged in three-dimensional space. Working from life as well as from photographs, the painting acknowledges observational details of the previous hanging structure. Abstract gestures resemble folded drapery, foliage and elaborate performing figures. The shadows cast onto and through these hanging motifs allude to projected light.

This work is informed by the avant-garde movements of cubism and the Italian futurists who experimented with a dynamic abstract form of theatre in which light, colour and architectural forms stood in for the performing body on stage.
