Paul Higgs Hurstville platform wall
string, pins, wood, mesh and acrylic paint on paper
128 x 176 cm
The inspiration for this paint construction came while anxiously waiting at Hurstville for the train home to Austinmer and contemplating the long-aged, carbon-dark brick wall running the full length of platform four. The wall unfolds as a fascinating, metered procession of unexpected intervals, empty voids, odd signs and peculiar graffiti. Vandal spray-paint, artistically injected into slotted weep holes, looks like pigment that once gushed from deep inside, then fanned out to beautifully cascade down the walls outside before drying.
The train goes a long way, but memories of my sadly departed Rosalba continue beyond this journey.
