Charles Rose Hand of Faith

oil, papier-mâché, gold leaf on canvas

151.6 x 121.8 cm

The Hand of Faith, discovered by Kevin Hillier on 26 September 1980 at Kingover, Victoria, is the largest gold nugget in the world found using a metal detector. The place where it was found was kept a secret and only revealed by Hillier 30 years later.

The nugget was sold to the Golden Nugget casino chain in America for over $US1 million and is on public display at Golden Nugget Las Vegas.

This painting is a unique celebration of the site where the nugget was originally unearthed. The Hand of Faith reinvigorated the so-called ‘golden triangle’ region of Victoria through renewed tourism, fossicking and mining.
