Ulan Murray Vita in extremis

copper, stainless steel and black steel

165 x 80 x 75 cm

I started my studies as a biologist and horticulturalist and these passions have stayed with me. Through years of observation, I construct my works from memory rather than reality. My work becomes a meditation on the environment, from the monumentality of landscape to the minute.

Vita in extremis investigates the extremities of coastal landscape: the harshness and physicality of its environment as it is repeatedly exposed to the winds. The work reflects the solidarity and strength of a single tree and its antiquity. It evokes a sense of power coupled with fragility. By illustrating the foliage with the roots I hope to illuminate the structure in its entirety, which is often overlooked.
