Tracey Deep Tree spirit

charred wood

110 x 150 x 110 cm

Tree spirit was inspired by the devastating 2020 bushfires. The charred native banksia tree branches, sourced from a farm in Bilpin in the Blue Mountains, NSW, are a connection to the unprecedented, horrific fires. The haunting, ghostly branches create a striking form visually. A shadow and silhouette of their previous life, the branches are interwoven with charred, repurposed wooden sticks, twisted, turned and interlocking. Tree spirit embodies a juxtaposition: a dance between Mother Nature’s powerful force and the fragility of humanity.
