James Powditch Crowdy Head (after Peter Powditch)

acrylic on paper and cardboard

122 x 366 cm

Crowdy Head on the NSW Mid North Coast holds a special place for us Powditchs. Dad grew up in nearby Taree and spent summers at Crowdy, a tiny fishing village, harbour and headland with two sweeping beaches on either side. As kids we spent January there, existing on a diet of prawns from the fish co-op and waiting for the perfect king tide that made the rockpool dangerous but not too dangerous. I’ve got a little painting Dad did of Crowdy in 1969 hanging above the couch, which I look at every day and think of him. Its simplicity and curve were the starting point for this work.
