Julianne Ross Allcorn Implexis

watercolour, pencil and gouache on pine board, in found walnut cabinet

85.5 x 269.2 cm (overall)

I love the Australian bush and all she shares with us. There is so much to learn and discover. With this in mind, I created Implexis (‘interwined’ in Latin) based on the four seasons as I know them – summer, autumn, winter and spring – and intertwined them with the six seasons from the Indigenous D’harawal calendar – Burran, Marrai’gang, Burrugin, Wiritjiribin, Ngoonungi and Parra’dowee.

Hidden throughout the painting are D’harawal flora and fauna that suggest the change of season. There are also Indigenous words, while the river glides seamlessly through the landscape with sea creatures.
