This portrait is of my grandmother. The element that stands out is the tiger, done in the traditional South Korean painting style minhwa. I painted the tiger as a symbol not just of my own heritage, but of my family’s. To me, my grandmother represents Korea itself. The tiger on her shoulders represents the weight of pressure to pass on her family’s customs. She has carried her rich culture and tradition and planted these seeds of heritage in me, allowing me to embrace my nationality. She is the roots of my family tree, the roots of my nationality.
