Sharyn Sale The only Goth at the swimming carnival

Individuality is a trait that I really value. And to be honest, I haven’t felt any more individual than I did when I turned up to my school’s swimming carnival in Goth make-up and a The Cure shirt. My aim with this self-portrait was to create a celebratory representation of subculture, as an antithesis to the anxiety that sometimes comes with feeling singled out. It is an affirming portrait, yet it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I find that artworks like that are the best kind to see yourself represented in.
